The basis of good flow meter selection is a clear understanding of the requirements of the particular application.
We recommend you spend some time fully evaluating the nature of the process fluid and of the overall installation in order to choose the best flow meter for your application. Below is a brief explanation of the different types of flow technology.
Also known as an inertial flow meter, this device measures mass flow rate of a fluid traveling through a tube. The mass flow rate is the mass of the fluid traveling past a fixed point per unit time.
This volumetric flow meter’s simple design does not have any moving parts and is ideal for wastewater applications. It provides an accurate reading for any liquid which is conductive or water based.
This extremely versatile instrument can be used to measure the flow velocity of gases, fluids, steam and even an aircraft’s airspeed.
Also described as an axial turbine, this uses the mechanical action of the turbine rotating in the liquid flow around an axis to create a readable rate of flow (gpm, lpm, etc.).
The turbine wheel is set in the path of a fluid stream, with all the flow travelling around it. The flowing fluid turns the turbine blades and when a steady rotation speed has been reached, the speed is proportional to fluid velocity.
A shedder bar is placed in the path of the fluid and as the fluid passes this bar, vortices are created. The frequency at which these vortices alternate sides is proportional to the flow rate of the fluid. A sensor is used to measure the frequency of the vortex shedding.
